MISSION

The Community Music School's mission is to teach and develop underserved youth through affordable private music instruction, leadership development and Christian mentoring. Through financial and in-kind donations and a faculty of volunteer music teachers, we make low cost music instruction possible for youth of various ethnic, racial, religious and socioeconomic backgrounds.

ABOUT

Founded in 1997, The Community Music School is a 501(c)(3) non-profit school specializing in affordable private music instruction, leadership development and Christian mentoring for underserved youth ages 8-18. Underserved youth include students who cannot afford private music instruction, students whose schools have cut or do not offer music education, and students whose home churches do not provide praise and worship music training. The students we serve demonstrate dedication, excellence and in most cases, financial need.

Low cost music instruction is made possible by our faculty of volunteer music teachers. Our volunteer music teachers range from GRAMMY Award winning producers to homeschool moms, from student teachers to former alumni. Many longstanding students serve as student teachers through our model of in-service learning. This model provides student teachers with an opportunity to exercise leadership and mentoring skills within the school.

Our example of in-service learning equips students to become successful in every aspect of life. Through music we develop students who are confident, concious and involved citizens, powerful communicators, leaders, professional musicians, songwriters, worship leaders, teachers, non-profit administrators, and Christians.

Low cost music instruction is also made possible by the financial and in-kind donations of participants and sponsors. Financial contributions go entirely towards our students. All operational costs, programming, special events, recording projects and instrument purchases are funded by donations. In our 19 years of community service we have always practiced this model of volunteerism and giving.

The Community Music School offers every student music theory, a private music lesson, a creative faith development class, and band (advanced students). Classes are held on Sunday afternoons. We are currently offering the following classes: bass, drums, guitar, piano, violin, voice, an art Bible study, and band. We teach over 50 classes each Sunday.

CMS students advance through four levels of music and leadership development including: 1.) becoming a dedicated music student, 2.) joining a youth band, 3.) volunteering as a student teacher, and for a select few, 4.) becoming the school's Director. Our current Director is a CMS alumni, having graduated through each level of development, and is a testament to the life changing power of our work in Christ.

We offer unparalleled music instruction, mentoring, and leadership opportunities for our students. Some of these opportunities have included touring Florida and the U.S. in youth worship bands, performing for hundreds of churches, annual conferences, and orphanages, and recording CDs. We are currently recording our 4th studio album.

The Community Music School has trained well over 500 underserved and deserving youth in the South Florida community. Many alumni have gone on to become prominent musicians, music directors, teachers, and worship leaders throughout the U.S. We currently boast over 20 alumni serving at churches in South Florida including FUMCCG, Christ Fellowship Downtown and Palmetto Bay, Old Cutler Presbyterian, Kendall United Methodist, First Presbyterian Church of Miami, Potential Church and many others.
