Worship

We offer a variety of worship styles and services to choose from.

>>Traditional Worship

On Sunday mornings we offer two traditional worship services, at 8:30 am and 11:00 am. We celebrate Holy Communion at both services on the first Sunday of every month.

The 8:30 am service is held in our historic chapel, off Coral Way near the corner of Segovia. With a smaller group and more intimate atmosphere, the 8:30 service offers a relaxed, less formal experience. As with all our worship services, music plays a central role in the 8:30 service, with vocal and instrumental solos, and vocal ensembles.

The 11:00 am service is held in our sanctuary, one of the most beautiful in Miami-Dade, which is entered from Hernando, between Coral Way and Biltmore Way. The 11:00 am service offers a more traditional worship experience, with a fully robed choir, soloists, and often handbell choirs, instrumental ensembles, and children’s choirs.

>>Contemporary Worship

Every Sunday at 9:30am we offer the Awakening Service, a more contemporary worship experience held in Founders Hall, the beautifully restored, 1931 sanctuary of the church. Founders Hall is at the corner of Coral Way and Segovia.

Offered for those who prefer a joyous worship experience in a casual setting, the Awakening incorporates a live band and singing, multimedia, and occasionally a short drama that illuminates the message being conveyed, as well as children's choirs. We celebrate Holy Communion each Sunday at the Awakening Service.

>>Spanish Worship

Every Sunday at 9:30am we also offer a Spanish worship service to provide for the needs of our Hispanic community. The service is offered in Head Center and communion is offered each Sunday.

>>Music

Sacred music – both traditional and contemporary – is an essential and cherished element of our worship and our lives in Christ. Whatever your gifts or talents, there is a place for you in one of our groups. If you have a passion for music, join us as we heed the words of Psalm 100: Come before Him with joyful singing.

  • Sanctuary Choir
The Sanctuary Choir leads our Traditional Sunday 11:00 am service. All are welcome; there are no auditions and no requirements beyond a desire for making joyous music in close fellowship with other members. Rehearsals are Thursdays from 7:30 pm to 9:00 pm in the Sanctuary.
  • Praise Band
The Praise Band leads our Awakening Service at 9:30 am on Sundays, with vocalists, instrumentalists and the occasional guest musician.
There are many different opportunities to participate, either as a performer or behind the scenes with the planning process. The only prerequisite is a passion for serving Christ! Rehearsals are Wednesdays at 12:00pm noon.
  • Handbell Choir
The Carillon Handbell Choir comprises both experienced and intermediate level bell ringers who perform at regular worship services several times a year, as well as at special events. Rehearsals are Mondays at 5:30pm in the Hanger Building in room #207.  Both Adults and Teens are welcome.
  • Children’s Choirs
Our Children’s Music Ministry offers four graded children’s choirs: one for pre-school, Kindergarten, 1st & 2nd grade and 3rd-5th grade. Elementary Music and Arts include singing, handbells, drama, dance and percussion, in addition to learning songs to sing in worship. Rehearsals are on Wednesdays in the Hanger Building.
  • Ensembles
If you play an instrument and wish to play in worship, please email one of the music staff with your interest.
  • Traditional Worship: Karen Shafer at kshafer@fumccg.org or 305-445-2578, ext. 108.
  • Contemporary Worship:  Debbie Freeman at thefreemangirls@gmail.com.

>>Worship Volunteers

In addition to our wonderful Music ministries, we offer a variety of opportunities for members who wish to help enrich our worship experience. Help prepare the sanctuary for Sundays, restock pews, arrange altar flowers, help prepare and serve Holy Communion, participate as a Lay reader, provide technical support for our multimedia presentations, or help with special or seasonal decorations. Children in Grades 3 and higher are invited to serve as acolytes and crucifers, symbolically bringing the light of Christ into our worship service each Sunday.
