We Care Quilters

The “We Care Quilters” are so named because 1) every single one of their quilts are donated to people most in need of love, and 2) they love what they do!

The Quilters are a group of people — some of them church members, some not — who meet on a weekly basis here at First Coral Gables to assemble and finish the colorful quilts they make. The church provides ample space and a quilt frame for them to work comfortably.

The Quilters make coverings of several kinds. Baby quilts are delivered to the VA Hospital, where they are gifted to pregnant veterans. Wheelchairs quilts are also made for veterans to use as lap blankets. Since 2015, they’ve donated 354 baby quilts and 112 wheelchair quilts to the VA Hospital!

Twin-size quilts are donated to a non-profit organization called Educate Tomorrow, which assists youth who’ve experienced foster care or homelessness, and coaches them towards higher education. The donated quilts—numbering 183 during the past 6 years—become a special touch of home for these young people as they enter college.

Over the years, the We Care Quilters have made miles of quilts for people who have relished them as symbols of love and comfort. They donated 543 quilts to Baypoint School, a juvenile justice program that housed and reformed troubled teens. The quilts were awarded to students who kept up their grades. Although the school no longer exists, the quilts were cherished for long after.

Bonds are formed when people meet together in life groups. “We’ve become like sisters,” said Helene Williams, who is actually the newest member of the group. They celebrate birthdays with a potluck lunch.

If you want to join a group to develop friendships and skills—all while doing good in the world—reach out to the We Care Quilters. They meet on Wednesdays at 9:30am in Room 123. No experience necessary!
